THE MAKING OF THE TREK CONVENTIONS, OR HOW TO THROW A PARTY FOR 12,000 OF YOUR MOST INTIMATE FRIENDS by Joan Winston. Published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1977. Ex-library book with usual stamps & markings. Good hardcover in good dust jacket in library mylar wrapper. Tight binding, solid spine, clean unmarked text. 8vo, illustrated, 252 pages. Written by Joan Winston, one of the small group of fans known as “The Committee” who organized the original Star Trek convention in New York in 1972, this book is a firsthand insider chronicle of how a single-subject television convention was invented almost by accident. Winston was able to secure Roddenberry&#######x27;s attendance at the first convention, and she also arranged for tapes of episodes, a blooper reel, and a truck of space memorabilia from NASA, details that make this less a fan memoir than a working record of how modern media fandom organized itself for the first time. The book matters because it documents a genuine turning point in popular culture: the moment television fandom moved from scattered letter-writing campaigns and mimeographed zines into organized, ticketed public gathering. The very first con, in 1972, expected a few hundred people and wound up hosting 3000 rabid fans eager to hear Gene Roddenberry and Isaac Asimov, proof that television audiences could organize with the seriousness of any subculture. For researchers of media fandom, convention culture, and the prehistory of contemporary fan conventions, Winston&#######x27;s account, expanded from her own chapter in the earlier Star Trek Lives! Remains a primary source written by someone who was literally in the room. Interest in this material has grown considerably as fan studies has matured into a recognized academic field, with scholars increasingly tracing the origins of organized convention culture, cosplay, and fan community-building back to the small circle of women, Winston prominent among them, who built the template in the early 1970s. As one of only two book-length firsthand accounts of the earliest Star Trek conventions, alongside Star Trek Lives! This title holds a distinct place in the collecting of early media-fandom ephemera, feminist popular-culture history, and twentieth-century broadcast history archives.

A rare survivor from the early days of UK Star Trek fandom, this is the official programme for INTERCON’78, the 5th Annual Star Trek Convention, held at the Fulcrum Centre, Slough, on 2-3 September 1978 in aid of the Leukaemia Research Fund. These fan-run conventions had very small print runs, and complete examples are now extremely hard to find. The programme includes a wealth of period material: – Full programme of events for Saturday and Sunday – Club listings featuring early UK sci-fi and Trek fan groups – Articles, photos and features from the convention – Vintage ads including Forbidden Planet, Starfleet Medical Reference Manual, and other 1970s fandom staples – Charity information and supporting material – Black-and-white photos, artwork, and fan-produced content capturing the look and feel of 1970s British fandom.

I have certain searched and I cannot find these photos anywhere. My neighbor Dave was a freelance celebrity sports and events photographer in the 60s and 70s and I’m pretty sure what I have is original and never published photographs from the very first Star Trek convention 1972. This is a picture Nichelle Nichols who portrayed the iconic and ground breaking Uhura on the original series and the first films. She’s a timeless and classic beauty in her beaded mock white turtleneck and orange “Star Trek Lives” pin back. These slides are the one and only copy. They are yours alone. I have not made copies.

Vinyl/canvas banner from recent Star Trek Las Vegas convention (August 25-28, 2022) of George Takei as Hikaru Sulu on The Original Series, signed by George Takei. I only saw 2 banners for each cast member, but there could be more. My opinion is that this is an extremely rare item, produced specifically for the convention. George Takei signed in red sharpie on Thursday. I thought the red would look good on the blue background, but it turned out very dark. The signature is most visible in the third picture. The visibility depends on the lighting. I witnessed this item being signed and guarantee it will pass any authenticator’s inspection. The banner is 2’x5′. It is made of vinyl/canvas and has 4 brass gromets for hanging. Will hang nicely on any wall and most doors. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Science Fiction & Horror\Star Trek Collectibles\Other Star Trek Collectibles”. The seller is “btmcardsandcollectibles” and is located in this country: US.
