The Star Trek trading card set released by LEAF in 1967 was the first Star Trek set released. The set was only released on a limited scale due to the company’s small distribution area (Ohio and Illinois), and was quickly recalled as a result of licensing issues. As such, it is extremely rare. The cards contained black and white images from various episodes, as well as blooper images from filming, coupled with reverse-side text that was largely fabricated, and had little connection to the episode the image originated from. In the mid-1990s, a dealer claimed to have discovered “a European version” of the same series (not a reprint, but decades old cards which were never released). A decade or so later, it was revealed to be a hoax. The dealer had received a letter from Paramount saying the cards were fake, and he copied the letterhead and signature to create a false letter of authorization. The cards were in fact, 1980s (unauthorized) reprints.
