Offered is a custom-fabricated Heartbeat Monitor (or Heartbeat Reader) as used by Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, in Star Trek:The Original Series See: screen capture, Img. To start, I procured a clean, vintage Shure Bros’ PE585 microphone-the exact same type as utilized for the original prop in the 1960s. While these are most often found today with either dented windscreens (from having been dropped or otherwise mishandled during its useful life) and/or evidence of corrosion on the main body, I carefully selected an exemplar that was relatively free from these common defects. Finally, I commission a custom-machined base, which replicates the original’s 3-piece assembly consisting of a flat spacer, a “winged” collar, and a threaded cap. As a starting point, measurements were gathered from the actual screen-used prop and compared with the graphic and given specs as shown in the Star Fleet Technical Manual Joseph, F. 2; from these, the proportions and dimensions of this item’s base were ever-so-slightly tweaked to obtain the proper visual appearance and functionality (the “winged” collar rotates as on the original prop in order to “adjust” the monitor). The machined aluminum base was then given a “brushed” finish so as to match the original prop as closely as possible. All combined, this makes for a highly detailed and accurate replica of this rarely-offered prop from the iconic television series.
