This lot is for an exceptional, original vintage STAR TREK television production script – Arthur Heinemann’s FIRST DRAFT for the classic third-season episode “THE WAY TO EDEN, ” dated November 6, 1968. Teleplay is a deacquisition from the TV Hall of Fame: Desilu Paramount / Greg Jein STAR TREK ARCHIVE and includes a COA from the Museum of Mom and Pop Culture. This substantial studio script retains its original yellow Paramount Television production cover and is identified with Prod. The script is dated November 6, 1968 and represents the first-draft stage of development for the episode ultimately produced as the memorable third-season adventure featuring Dr. Sevrin and his followers in search of Eden. Piece includes production material including cast and set information and runs through its concluding page, marked FADE OUT and THE END. The final script pagination reaches IV-65, consistent with surviving examples of this First Draft. Script is hand-stamped with #16 on the personnel distribution list. The red dot is associated with Production Company markings. Greg Jein was one of the most important science-fiction and STAR TREK collectors and production artists of his generation, and his extraordinary collection included major quantities of original STAR TREK production material. A handwritten “Roberta” inscription/signature appears on the cover. The identity and significance of Roberta have not been independently established, so it is offered as an interesting period inscription rather than as authenticated cast or production-personnel provenance. STORYLINE In “The Way to Eden, ” the USS Enterprise encounters a group of rebellious young idealists who reject the technological civilization of the Federation and are searching for a mythical, unspoiled paradise they call Eden. Led by the charismatic but dangerously unstable Dr. Sevrin, the group ultimately takes control of the Enterprise in pursuit of their dream, forcing Kirk, Spock and the crew to confront the seductive-and potentially destructive-appeal of absolute freedom and escape from modern society. The episode is one of the most unmistakably 1960s artifacts in the entire original Star Trek series, directly engaging with the era’s youth rebellion, counterculture, anti-technology sentiment and search for an alternative way of life. Beneath its famously colorful “space hippie” surface is a serious Star Trek theme: the tension between individual freedom, idealism, conformity and responsibility.
